Major Dhyan Chand Stadium witnessed another glorious moment in the history of Indian hockey, when the Indian colts, down by 0-1, bounced back to script a historic win against Spain, entering the semifinals of the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup after 11 years.
The match began on an impressive note, with none of the teams ready to budge. However, Spanish flicker Marc Serrahima took advantage of a penalty corner to give Spain a lead of 1-0. Even though the Indians tried their best, they couldn’t bridge the gap in the first half.
Almost 23 minutes into the second half, and still, there was no sign of INDIA breaching the Spanish defence. For once, it looked as if INDIA would lose this match at a crucial juncture. The match, which was slowly changing into a waste of time, was brought back into live action. 9 minutes later, star defender Harmanpreet Singh struck another goal into the Spanish goal, sealing INDIA’s fate, and creating history as well. This is after 11 years, that INDIA has entered the semifinals of FIH Junior Hockey World Cup.
