Kanchanmala Pande, a blind Indian athelete was forced to beg in Berlin so that she could borrow money and enter into the World Championship.
The situation arose because the Government Money sanctioned for the tour did not reach her. Beating all odds, Pande ended up winning Silver and qualified for the World Championship. The Government’s apathy on this matter is highly distasteful.
In the light of this incident, Abhinav Bindra expressed his anger on twitter over this inadmissible treatment vetted out to the athletes. He took it out on Twitter and wrote,”This is UNACCEPTABLE. People must be held accountable.” He even tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel in his tweet with a hope to reach out to the higher authorities for this imprudence of PCI.
PCI however is blaming the Sports Authority of India for this slip.
Pande works as an assistant with the Reserve Bank of India and was in Berlin to participate in the Para Swimming Championship.
When asked Kanchanmala Pande, she said, “ I never thought I would face such problems. I had to take a loan of Rs 5 lakh so that I could participate in the tournament. I had to qualify for the World Championship and I don’t know why PCI didn’t understand it’s importance.”
“I was not given any official confirmation if I will receive a reimbursement for the expense I bore. I had to pay around Rs 70,000 for the hotel and more than Rs 40,000 for food,” she added.
